High tide in Chicago? This is a fascinating little piece about how sea creatures, when removed from their homes to somewhere away from the ocean change their schedule. They’ll change their activities based on the tides of where they are, even if they’re in the middle of the country. It refers to Barbara Kingsolver’s essay, High Tide In Tucson, which is well worth reading.
True facts about the owl: This video, is flat out hilarious. It is, indeed, full of facts about owls. But they are presented with, um, let’s just say flair. My favorite line: “The owl is what we call a bird of prey, because it eats prey. Just as the owls call of apes of the hamburger because we eat hamburgers.”
Bear attacks: A number of bear attacks have been in the news recently. This article provides some good perspective. It also has some good simple safety advice. If a bear is stalking you, it thinks you’re prey. Act aggressive. If you are attacked by a bear that you have surprised, around a corner on a trail, say, play dead. Once the bear no longer sees you as a threat, it will be more likely to leave you alone.
