Sehome shocks Lakewood, 35-13

MARYSVILLE — There was no second-half magic for the Lakewood Cougars.

Sehome scored the first two touchdowns of the game and held the Cougars scoreless in the second half to beat previously undefeated Lakewood 35-13 in a 2A bi-district game at Dick Cardinal Stadium in North Marysville on Friday night.

The loss leaves Lakewood a game short of the state playoffs for the first time since 2010.

The Cougars looked sluggish from the outset and Sehome took advantage, especially on the ground. The Mariners piled up 130 rushing yards in the first half, including runs of 14, 19 and 25 yards that gashed the usually stout Cougars’ defensive line. Sehome would finish with 314 yards on the ground in the game led by Taylor Rapp’s 129 yards on 11 carries. Rapp finished the Cougars off with a 79-yard jaunt late in the fourth quarter.

Trailing 14-0, Lakewood needed some trickery to get on the board. On the first play from scrimmage after Sehome’s second touchdown, Blake Watts shoveled the ball to Paulmer Gregory in the right flat. Gregory feigned a run, wound up and hit Matt Seiber 30 yards down the field. Seiber did the rest, winding around Sehome defenders and beating them to the end zone for the Cougars’ first score.

But besides that play and the 28-yard touchdown pass to Brett Bustad, the Cougars were kept in check for much of the first half, gaining just 63 yards from scrimmage. The second half wasn’t much better. Lakewood punted, was intercepted and fumbled on its first three possessions of the second half before putting together a nice drive down to the Sehome 15-yard line midway through the fourth quarter. But four straight incompletions led the Lakewood turning the ball over and on the next play Rapp went 79 yards to all but seal the Cougars’ fate.
