CENTRALIA — Playing at what King’s coach Jim Shapiro described at “80 percent.” Knights running back Chris Yand had 38 carries for 293 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Knights past Tenino in a 1A state tournament first round game.
“(Yand) had a car accident, he was rear-ended coming to school and he couldn’t play against Eatonville (last week) because of back problems,” Shapiro said. “But he had all-star performance tonight.”
Both of Yand’s touchdowns came in the pivotal second quarter when the Knights outscored the Beavers 21-7. King’s opened the scoring on a Jordan Turner 19-yard TD pass from Koa Wilkins. After Tenino’s Calvin Guzman 10-yard run tied the game, Yand scored on runs of 3 and 1 yards to give the Knights a two-touchdown lead entering the half.
Tenino tried to mount a comeback, but Knights outside linebacker Karl Sather stopped the Beavers on fourth down run play on the Knights 5-yard line with 8 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Sather capped off the ensuing drive with an 8-yard touchdown run to ice the game and put King’s into the quarterfinals for a fifth straight season.
Shapiro gave a lot of credit to the King’s offensive and defensive lines for the win.
“Games like this are won up front,” Shapiro said. “Those guys really made a difference.”
King’s will play the winner of today’s Cascade Christian-Montesano game.
