Prep wrestling: Snohomish 43, Sedro-Woolley 22.

SNOHOMISH — Highlighted by a victory by senior captain Keaton Mills and quick pins by Garrett Stich in the 182-pound division and Noah Bomar at 138 pounds, Snohomish went on to defeat Sedro-Woolley 43-22 in a non league wrestling match on Thursday night.

Mills’ match up against Thor Wagoner at 132 pounds proved to be the highlight of the night according to Snohomish head coach Rob Zabel. With a score of 5-4 going into the third period, Mills rallied in the final two minutes to defeat Wagoner by a 10-5 score that proved key in the Panthers’ overall victory.

“Keaton is definitely a leader,” said Zabel. “He was voted as our team captain last year (as a junior) and that’s something that doesn’t happen a lot in our program.”

Heading into Thursday’s match Zabel knew that opening up against the Cubs, despite his teams experience and overall leadership would not be an easy task.

“We knew that perennially that (Sedro-Woolley) is one of the best teams in Whatcom county,” Zabel said. “We’ve specifically tried to schedule them the last two years because we believe it’s a good way to start our season. They’re a physical and well coached team.”

Stich and Bomar also were impressive in their victories for the Panthers. Stich pinned Nate Vaughn in 59 seconds and Bomar gained victory by pinning Bryer Johnson in 1 minute and 19 seconds.

“Both Stich and Noah really impressed me tonight,” said Zabel. “They came out and got first round pins, which as a coach helps you relax a bit. It’s always nice when you don’t have to stress for that entire six minutes.”
