MONROE — When the cops closed in Monday night, the thieves allegedly tried to ditch the loot. Unfortunately for them, Monroe police and a Snohomish County sheriff’s deputy already had their number.
The four young people from King County were in a dark-colored sedan, stopped by a deputy along U.S. 2. The vehicle matched the description of a car that minutes earlier had left the scene of a smash-and-grab burglary, Monroe police said.
Just before 10:30 p.m., somebody kicked through the glass doors at the AT&T store in Monroe. The thieves were seen carrying out merchandise and putting it in a Ford with tinted windows.
Witnesses provided police with a description of the car. As the deputy closed in to stop the vehicle, a cardboard box suddenly showed up along the shoulder.
Inside the car, the deputy found three young men and young woman, ages 15 to 19.
“As one of the suspects exited the vehicle, broken glass pieces were found on his shoes,” Monroe police said.
There was more broken glass inside the car. Tucked into the woman’s clothing, meanwhile, was a box label with the address of the Monroe AT&T store.
A witness to the break-in reportedly identified the car stopped along the highway was the one used by the thieves.
A Monroe police sergeant, meanwhile, checked the cardboard box that the deputy had spotted along the road. There were cellphones inside.
All of the suspects were booked for investigation of second-degree burglary and first-degree theft.
