I read the Sunday Viewpoints commentary on putting education in reach for every child. Does everyone remember Malala Yousafzai’s bravery after being shot in the head by the Taliban because she insisted on her right to be educated?
To create a safer world, it is necessary to educate everyone. A Save the Children study found that for every year a boy completes of school, he is 20 percent less likely to be involved in violence. There are 250 million children who cannot read — 40 percent of the world’s children. 57 million primary-school age children don’t attend school. Is it hopeless?
No. Because the Global Partnership for Education is ready to educate 29 million children. They have already been successful in educating 22 million children. If the United States contributes $250 million over the next two years, we can join with other donor countries to provide education to those 29 million children. There may be Leonardos and Malalas in that 29 million. As Malala said, “one child, one teacher, one book, one pen, can change the world.”
