Outdoor events: Orcas, hiking, backpacking, amphibians, more

Whales: Learn more about the orcas and other whales that live in the Salish Sea at 7 p.m. Thursday in Mukilteo. Howard Garrett of the Orca Network will speak and present a slideshow. There will be a door prize for a pair of whale watching tickets. Get more info here.

ORCA: Learn about EvCC’s Ocean Research College Academy at an informational session on Thursday at 1205 Craftsman Way, Suite 203, Everett. See student work, talk with faculty and learn about the program and the facilities. Get more info about ORCA here.

Hike: Learn the basics of hiking at a free seminar at the Mountaineers Seattle program center on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Registration is requested here.

Boat show: The Anacortes Spring Boat Show is Friday to Sunday. There will be more than 100 power and sail boats. You can meet with aftermarket vendors, rigging companies, sail makers and more. More information here.

Water: A celebration of World Water Day is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at Brightwater Center in Woodinville. There will be activities for all ages including crafts, outdoor exploration and science experiments. More info here.

Backpacking: Guidebook author Craig Romano will offer ideas on backpacking in Washington at 7 p.m. on March 24 at the Woodinville Library. He will also speak at 7 p.m. March 25 at the Issaquah Library and April 21 at the Kirkland Library. Get more info here.

Wetlands: Get an up-close look at wetland creatures at the Northwest Stream Center on March 25. Before the show, the presenter will scoop up some critters from the wetlands and bring them in in viewing trays. $5 for members, $7 for nonmembers. Register by calling 425-316-8592.

Frogs: Learn about how you can get involved in a nationwide citizen research project to help protect amphibian populations. The event is from noon to 5 p.m. on March 28 at Brightwater Center in Woodinville. More info here.

Geology: Learn about Puget Sound’s glacial history at 7 p.m. April 2 at Mukilteo City Hall. Jon Riedel, a geologist with North Cascades National Park, will talk about how the area changes as the climate changes. Call 425-357-6020 for more information.

More frogs: Learn about native frogs and other amphibians in an indoor/outdoor event on April 4 at Brightwater Center. The event is best for those ages 6 and older. After an indoor presentation, you’ll head outside to look for breeding frogs, toads, salamanders, newts and their eggs in the wetland. More info here.

Foraging: Learn about urban foraging from 2-3:30 p.m. on April 5 at the Everett Public Library. Melany Vorass, author of “The Front Yard Forager,” will speak about safe gathering, ethics, cooking and more. More info here.

Orcas: Learn about orcas at the Northwest Stream Center on April 5. Biologist and photographer Jeff Hogan will put on Killer Whale Tales at 11 a.m. Register by calling 425-316-8592.

Biking: A race in the Singletrack Cycles West Side Mountain Bike series is on April 6 at Lord Hill Regional Park. Registration begins at 8 a.m. More info here.

Rowing: The Lake Stevens Rowing Club will host a spring regatta at North Cover Park on April 12-13. There will be junior, masters, novice and open races. Register by April 5. More info here.

Help: The Snohomish County helicopter rescue team has a fundraiser on April 19. The team lost its funding and this fundraiser is part of the effort to keep it going. Get more info, buy tickets, or simply donate here.
