MALAGA — A Chelan County fire chief says a fast-moving brush fire in central Washington has damaged power lines and prompted the Chelan County sheriff’s office to warn residents of about 40 homes that they might need to leave.
County Fire District No. 1 Chief Mike Burnett said late Wednesday night that multiple power poles were down and crews were working to restore power.
The Wenatchee World reports that Chelan County Public Utility District spokeswoman Kim Craig said the damaged power lines have temporarily knocked out power to an Alcoa smelter and to more than 400 PUD customers.
The fire south of Malaga was first reported late Wednesday afternoon. Fire spokeswoman Kay McKellar says the fire has burned an area about four miles long and a half mile wide. The cause is under investigation.
There are no reports of injuries.
