Bruce Irvin had hip surgery, says he’ll be back for training camp

The Seahawks had another session of organized team activities Monday, and while it is voluntary, one notable absence was that of Bruce Irvin. Players miss these from time to time for various personal reasons—or in the case of Marshawn Lynch, miss pretty much all of them—and again, they’re voluntary, but it was noteworthy that Irvin was absent, particularly given this series of Tweets from Sunday night and Monday.

And sure enough, a team spokesman confirmed that Irvin had hip surgery Monday. No further update was given by the team, and Pete Carroll was not available to the media Monday, but Irvin did send out the following update, saying he’ll be back by training camp.

Among other players not practicing were Lynch, who again, doesn’t attend many of these things, and DT Tony McDaniel, who was out for personal reasons. LB Malcolm Smith, who is recovering from ankle surgery, was out of a boot, but still not practicing. CB Phillip Adams didn’t practice, also falling under the “personal reasons” explanation. WR Sidney Rice (knee), LT Russell Okung (foot) and S Kam Chancellor (hip) continue to sit out while recovering from surgeries.

A few players who have been sitting out with various injuries returned to action CB Tharold Simon, DT Jesse Williams and WR Chris Matthews. And as a reminder, we only see a few of these OTAs, so just because a player was out before doesn’t mean they haven’t practiced since.

With Irvin and Smith still sidelined, Mike Morgan worked with the No. 1 defense at strongside linebacker while KJ Wright played weakside. Jeron Johnson continues to act as the No. 1 strong safety with Kam Chancellor out.
