EVERETT — Community Transit this fall will add 13,800 hours of bus service per year in Snohomish County, but the increase will be far short of the 160,000 hours that were cut from the system in 2010 and 2012.
The Community Transit board of directors approved service changes at its monthly meeting Thursday. Greater sales-tax revenue is enabling the increase.
If sales-tax revenue continues to rise, Community Transit expects to add another 25,000 hours of service in 2015, said Community Transit spokesman Martin Munguia.
The changes take effect Sept. 29. They include restoration of the connection between Mukilteo and the Lynnwood Transit Center and more frequent mid-day service between the Lynnwood Transit Center and Edmonds.
While service hours will increase overall, Route 110 will be eliminated due to lack of demand. The route runs between Edmonds and Mountlake Terrace.
The service increase will add 7,500 hours of new bus service. Eliminating some stops on certain routes will yield another 6,300 hours of service, for a total increase of 13,800 hours.
The increased service will cost $1 million.
Dwindling sales-tax revenue prompted Community Transit to cut 80,000 service hours per year in 2010 and another 80,000 hours in 2012. The increase this fall represents a 3 percent increase over service today.
