A task force convened by the governor to come up with recommendations for regulating unmanned aerial vehicles — or drones, as they are popularly known — had its first meeting Monday in Olympia.
The task force consists of lawmakers, state officials, civil liberties advocates, business people and private citizens.
Gov. Jay Inslee called for the task force in April when he vetoed a bill regarding government use of drones in Washington. At the time, he imposed a 15-month moratorium on using drones by state agencies reporting to his office, and he asked local law enforcement to do the same.
The state needs a law that “protects the privacy of Washingtonians while also creating clear and fair standards for the use of new technology to protect the safety and well-being of our citizens,” he said in the letter.
The group will follow up with meetings on Aug. 11, Oct. 13 and Nov. 10, according to his office.
