EVERETT — After a short lightning delay, the Spokane Indians beat the Everett AquaSox 3-2 in 10 innings Monday night at Everett Memorial Stadium.
The score was tied 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning when the game was delayed because of lightning.
Everett had the winning run on second with one out in the bottom of the ninth when, after repeated lightning strikes in the distance, the umpires decided to pull the teams off the field for safety purposes.
In the top of the 10th, Everett reliever Samuel Lindquist walked four Spokane batters to force in the winning run.
Spokane scored two runs in the top of the first inning. The first three batters of the game reached base, with Jose Trevino’s single to left driving in the first run. Pepe Cardona later added a sacrifice fly to left to give the Indians a 2-0 lead.
Everett got one back in the bottom of the second when Corey Simpson launched a long solo home run to left leading off the inning. The homer ended a stretch of 12 innings without a hit for the Sox.
The Sox then tied it in the seventh. With runners on first and second Jordan Cowan hit a grounder to the right side of the infield. Indians second baseman Isiah Kiner-Falefa ranged to get it and threw to first, but no one was covering the bag, and Adam Martin raced around from second to make it 2-2.
Everett, with a depleted bullpen, received a much-needed 62/3-inning effort from starting pitcher Ramire Cleto. Then reliever Hawtin Buchanan struck out five in 21/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Ward promoted
Sox infielder Nelson Ward was promoted Monday to Clinton of the mid Single-A Midwest League. Ward, the Seattle Mariners’ 12th-round pick in this year’s amateur draft out of the University of Georgia, appeared in 31 games with the Sox, batting .223 with two home runs and 11 RBI. Before that he batted .340 in 11 games with Pulaski of the rookie Appalachian League.
No-hitter redux
When Everett was no-hit by Spokane on Sunday, it was the first time the Sox were no-hit since Salem-Keizer’s Craig Wescott, Brandon Graves and Wilber Bucardo combined to no-hit Everett on Aug. 22, 2009. Everett has been no-hit five times in the franchise’s 31-year history, three times as the Everett Giants and twice as the Everett AquaSox. Everett has thrown just one no-hitter as Maximo Aleys no-hit Bend on July 21, 1989 as a member of the Giants.
