EVERETT — The Everett AquaSox offense was stuck in neutral during the first two games of its series against the Spokane Indians. In the third-and-final game of the series Tuesday night the Sox found the turbo-boost button.
Everett erupted for 10 runs as the Sox slugged their way past the Indians 10-5 at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Everett managed a total of just five hits through 21 innings in the first two games of the series. But the Sox bettered that total midway through the fourth inning Tuesday, and the runs just kept flowing. The 10 runs were nearly double the number Everett scored total (six) during its four-game losing streak leading into the night.
Chris Mariscal went 2-for-3 with a walk and a pair of runs, and Austin Cousino ripped a pair of doubles for Everett (9-10 second half, 20-37 overall).
The Sox received a solid start from Dan Altavilla. The right-hander, who was the Seattle Mariners’ fifth-round pick in this year’s amateur draft, allowed three runs on seven hits and one walk in six innings, striking out four to improve his record to 4-2. Altavilla has won four consecutive starts after going winless in the first seven of his professional career.
Logan Seifrit, who only arrived from Peoria of the rookie Arizona League as the game was starting, pitched the final three innings to earn the save.
Diego Cedeno finished 4-for-4 to pace Spokane (8-11, 33-24).
The Sox scored five runs during the decisive fourth inning, turning a 3-2 deficit into a 7-3 lead. Mariscal grounded an RBI double down the left-field line and later scored on a passed ball. Then Cousino ripped a two-run double over the head of left fielder Saquan Johnson and scored on a passed ball himself, giving Everett a four-run advantage.
Monday’s late result
Everett ended up falling to Spokane 3-2 in 10 innings in Monday’s game, which ended late because of a 59-minute lightning delay. The score was tied 2-2 with one out in the bottom of the ninth when the lightning arrived.
When the game resumed, the Indians were handed the game in the 10th. Everett reliever Sam Lindquist entered the game at the start of the inning, but he couldn’t find the strike zone, walking four of the five batters he faced. His bases-loaded walk to Isiah Kiner-Falefa forced home the go-ahead run.
Lindquist’s struggles forced the Sox to bring in catcher Luke Guarnaccia to pitch Everett out of the jam. Guarnaccia, who was making his fourth appearance on the mound this season, retired both batters he faced.
