The school lunch program authored by Michelle Obama and implemented by the feds in 2012 is a big flop. The School Nutrition Association, which initially championed the program, now points out that more than 1 million students have quit buying or eating school lunches, and many students who do eat school lunches are throwing the required fruits and vegetables away, which amounts to $1 billion in food waste per year. This is enough to serve almost 800 million reimbursable school lunches to students per year, according to the New York Times.
This program is costing school districts dearly as they have to purchase more expensive foods to comply with the new regulations. Which, you guessed it, gets thrown away. As a result of this, many school districts have opted out of the government subsidized program.
The SNA expressed concerns about this program as early as 2011 but have never gotten the ear of the Congress. Oh, I forgot it is Michelle’s pet project. As much as I hate to see her, her mother and daughters traveling the world in luxurious style on the taxpayer dime, I would much rather see her doing that than subjecting our school children to her ridiculous ideas on what they should or should not eat. If you want to see our kids in better physical condition then reinstate physical education into their daily programs.
