LAKE STEVENS — A hangar with a plane inside caught fire early Monday afternoon in a rural area between Lake Stevens and Marysville.

No one was injured, but the damage was extensive.

The homeowner in the 10900 block of 94th Street NE called 911, said Travis Hots, chief of the Getchell and rural Arlington fire districts.

Dark smoke could be seen from miles away. Some vehicles near the hangar also were damaged.

The area does not have fire hydrants. That contributed to a large response from neighboring fire districts trucking in water, Hots said. Other districts that offered aid included rural Arlington, Granite Falls, Lake Stevens, Marysville, Silvana and Tulalip Bay.

An investigator with the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office was trying to determine the cause.

It was the second time in three days the rural fire district was called for an airplane-related incident.

On Saturday afternoon, Robert L. Elder, 80, of Camano Island was killed and another man was critically injured after a small plane went down in the Getchell area. Elder was a passenger.

The crash was reported about 3:30 p.m. at Frontier Airpark north of Lake Stevens. That’s about a mile from Monday’s hangar fire, Hots said.

The pilot, 66, was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
