OLYMPIA — The state Transportation Commission wants to look into a pay-by-the-mile tax that could replace the gas tax in Washington.
The commission voted Tuesday to ask the Legislature to fund a year-long test of a road usage charge.
The Olympian reports consultants say a tax based on miles traveled would be more fair. A tax of about 2 cents a mile would raise about as much as the state’s current gas tax of 37 cents a gallon.
Commission executive director Reema Griffith says drivers could be offered a variety of ways to pay: a flat fee for unlimited miles or charges based on odometer readings or measured by a smartphone application or reporting device in the vehicle.
