LAKE STEVENS — Search-and-rescue workers joined detectives from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office this week in looking for clues into how human remains ended up in an area south of Lake Stevens.
The search-and-rescue team worked Wednesday and Thursday with detectives from the Major Crimes Unit, but it is too early to know if foul play was involved in the death, officials said.
“They are very good at working with human remains,” sheriff’s spokeswoman Shari Ireton said. “We have no information at this point to say it is suspicious.”
Deputies with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office were called to the 12000 block of 7th Place SE shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday. The call came from a homeowner in the area who found the remains outside. The discovery was made in an unincorporated part of Lake Stevens.
Search and rescue was asked to help because the area that needed explored is large and brush-covered, Ireton said.
Detectives are waiting for the Snohomish County Medical Examiner to determine the age and gender of the person as well as the cause and manner of death.
“There is no evidence at this point that has identified who it might be, how they died or how they ended up there,” Ireton said. “That’s what we are working on.”
