EVERETT — The USS Nimitz left Everett Tuesday morning for a 16-month stay at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for extensive modernization and maintenance work.
The aircraft carrier arrived at Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton at about 1:30 p.m.
The Nimitz, the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 11, had been scheduled to relocate a week ago, but an unplanned mechanical problem forced a delay.
Approximately 2,200 of the ship’s crew transferred with the Nimitz across Puget Sound. The Nimitz’s homeport was changed to Bremerton as an administrative measure to make it easier for families to stay together.
