Garden Club plants seeds of good

The Everett Garden Club has been busy lately. Members recently donated $1,000 each to Discovery Elementary and View Ridge Elementary for their school garden programs.

The club last year also for the first time spent some time with residents at Forest View Transitional Health Center. Members crafted flower arrangements in mugs to give to each resident. Silver Creek provided live music. The club hopes to make it an annual tradition.

“We are an extremely small club and are proud of the things we have been able to accomplish,” said Kathy Nazare, president of the garden club.

The club was especially proud of the $1,000 grants it gave the schools, “which is a lot for us,” Nazare said. “And they were delighted with it, to say the least.”

Club members plan to volunteer their time and talents with the students, too, on special days later in the year.

The money was raised from raffles and an annual pre-Mother’s Day plant sale. The next sale is set for May 9, at the corner of 52nd Street and Evergreen Way.

Club bylaws call for promoting a love of horticulture through good deeds. New members are welcome.

The club meets at 10 a.m. the second Wednesday of each month at Memorial Community Church, 710 Pecks Drive, Everett.

County attorney to be given Advocate for Youth Award

Snohomish County deputy prosecuting attorney Adam Cornell will be honored with the Center for Children and Youth Justice’s annual Norm Maleng Advocate for Youth Award at the organization’s breakfast fundraiser at 7 a.m. March 17 at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel.

Cornell grew up in the state’s foster care system, experiencing the roadblocks many children face to stability. He credits the love of foster parents, teachers, friends — and, eventually an adoptive family — for his success.

Cornell, a resident of Edmonds and a former national Youth of the Year for the Boys &Girls Clubs, will share his story with more than 600 guests at the charitable organization’s annual fundraising event. To learn more or to register, go to www.ccyj.org/news-events.
