Seattle Mariners pitching prospect Victor Sanchez remains in “critical condition” in Venezuela after undergoing surgery for head wounds suffered Friday when struck by a boat’s propeller while swimming, according to Lavinotinto.com.
There was no update issued Monday by the Mariners, who have only confirmed that Sanchez, 20, was hospitalized after suffering an accident. The club is limited by federal health reporting laws.
Reports from Lavinotinto.com and other outlets say Sanchez was swimming off Carapano, which is located near the center of Venezuela’s northern coastline.
Those reports say Sanchez underwent a craniectomy (a removal of a portion of the cranium) and a drainage of hematomas (collections of blood outside of blood vessels).
The Mariners signed Sanchez, a Venezuelan native, as a 16-year-old in 2011 for $2.5 million. He was 7-6 with a 4.19 ERA last season in at Double-A Jackson before making seven starts in the Venezuela Winter League.
Sanchez pitched for the Everett AquaSox in 2012. He was 6-2 with a 3.18 ERA in 15 games.
