Regarding the letter, “Thanks for keeping the paper dry”: “Do Plastic Bags Really Take 500 Years to Breakdown in a Landfill?” reads the headline of a Slate.com article. Maybe, but maybe not, as the article goes on to explain that the photodegradable process may actually take twice as long to fully disappear. With many Seattle-area cities voting to ban the plastic shopping bag, I was surprised that Herald readers are still requesting the daily delivery in plastic sleeves. Another alternative, albeit possibly not cost effective at this time, would be landfill-friendly bio-bag sleeves. In the meantime, I’ve requested that my uncovered paper be tossed on my partially covered porch. Murphy’s law, or bad karma from forgetting my reusable shopping bag at Bartell’s, dictates that it will wind up on my uncovered side if it rains. However, I can wait a few hours for it to dry. This sure seems to sure the beat the years we’ll wait for its plastic cover to go away.
