Today in history …
A regional History Day contest for students from Snohomish, Skagit and Whatcom counties was held March 14 at Western Washington University. Top finishers now advance to the state History Day contest May 2 in Auburn.
Local winners took home top prizes for historical projects that looked at a wide variety of historical figures, from Austrian psychoanalyst Josef Breuer to Tulalip carver Jerry Jones.

Bervell named Achievement Scholar
Michael Bervell of Snohomish, a senior at Kamiak High School, has won a National Achievement Scholarship of $2,500. There were 700 such awards given out this year by the National Achievement Scholarship Program to outstanding black students nationwide.
Bervell plans to study neuroscience.
Top CC students named
Edmonds Community College students Wilson Charles and Maria Veronica and Everett Community College student Taylor Nisonger-Bond were recognized for their scholarship, leadership, and community service at a ceremony March 26 at South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia.
The students were named to this year’s All-Washington Academic Team, which recognizes and honors the state’s top community and technical college students. They each received $250 scholarships.
Charles, 35, was born in Haiti and became a U.S. citizen in 2011. He is visually impaired. Charles’ ultimate career goal is to serve as a foreign service officer with the U.S. State Department. He’s now at the University of Washington.
Veronica is a 21-year-old economics major and serves in student government at EdCC. She is on the honor roll and is a Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society member.
Nisonger-Bond, 22, overcame addictions and is now pulling a 4.0 GPA at EvCC with plans to transfer to Western Washington University and earn a degree in human services. Her goal is to help others who suffer with addiction and mental illness.
Snohomish student serves as page
Peter Faber, a sophomore at Snohomish High School and Academy Northwest, recently served as a page in the state House of Representatives. He was sponsored by Rep. Dan Kristiansen, R-Snohomish. Faber is a neighbor to Kristiansen. He hopes to attend the Naval Academy after high school and become an aviator and a commissioned officer with the U.S. Navy.
On to DECA’s big dance
Many local students qualified at a recent state competition for the DECA International Career Development Conference, to be held April 25-28 in Orlando, Florida. About 17,000 students, advisors, business people and alumni are expected to gather at the annual event.

The Washington Technology Student Association tournament was held March 26-28 in Bellevue.
Mountlake Terrace High School junior Haeley Johnston was elected president of WTSA. Lydia Kim of Jackson High School was elected reporter.

Getting grubby for education
King County, Waste Management and Cedar Grove are teaching kids and their parents the importance of keeping compost clean.
At Discovery Elementary School in south Everett, teachers handed out “Keep Compost Clean” cards. Kids fill the cards with the stickers that are often affixed to produce. Then, for every card turned in, a bag of compost is donated to their school’s garden. The students already have laid down fresh compost.
Cedar Grove also donates compost to schools through its Compost Days promotion, which continues through April 15.
