SEATAC — A Des Moines city council member has quit the council after being accused of slapping a 6-year-old special needs student on a school bus.
The Seattle Times reports the former King County Superior Court judge and bus driver for the Highline School District announced her resignation in a letter Wednesday.
A criminal complaint has been filed in SeaTac Municipal Court that charges 62-year-old Jeanette Burrage with fourth-degree assault. Burrage is a former state lawmaker and judge.
She said she was quitting the Des Moines council to minimize the distraction caused by the school bus incident.
March 10 school district surveillance footage showed a driver slapping a child, who was standing on a bus seat in the midst of an apparent meltdown.
