SNOHOMISH — Snohomish County is gearing up to build nearly three miles of road shoulder this summer on Broadway Avenue, east of Highway 9.
Learn more at a meeting scheduled Wednesday evening at the Cathcart Elementary School multipurpose room, 8201 188th St., Snohomish. The meeting is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m.
The work aims to make Broadway safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
The upcoming construction will add an 8-foot-wide shoulder on the west side of the road, between Yew Way and 164th Street SE. About 5,300 cars drive that stretch of Broadway daily. Detention ponds and stormwater vaults are included in the work to improve drainage.
Construction is expected to start in early July and continue into the summer of 2016.
Because of shallow bedrock in the northern part of the project, construction crews will have to dig through solid sandstone. That could lead to lots of noise.
Crews will attempt to keep noise at a minimum during possible nighttime and evening work.
Expect road closures, with one expected to shut down a portion of roadway for 14 days and another for seven days. Crews are likely to restrict traffic to one lane in places during the project.
Construction plans and detour routes will be available at Wednesday’s meeting. County staff will be on hand to answer questions.
The budget is $5.7 million. Funding is coming from a $70 million settlement related to King County’s Brightwater treatment plant. The money also has paid for new parks, habitat projects, roads and drainage improvements.
