Camano Island fire changes meetings
Camano Island Fire and Rescue is taking steps to become more transparent. Board meetings now will start rotating at fire stations around the island so they are easier to attend, Assistant Chief Levon Yengoyan said. The budget and meeting minutes also are being posted online.
The changes come as the fire department seeks a renewal of the emergency medical services levy in the Aug. 4 primary election. It also will be collecting input on a long-term plan to be completed before the end of the year. The fire department serves about 16,000 people on the island.

Road project on park and ride lots: Major renovations are underway at the cramped Ash Way and Swamp Creek park and ride lots that will result in more parking.
Most of the work on the Community Transit projects is taking place over the weekends to minimize disruption. When work is complete, by this fall, Ash Way will have 15 new parking spots and Swamp Creek will squeeze in up to 25 more spots.
New LED lighting is going in at both locations. And Ash Way also is getting security cameras and an added electronic sign notifying riders of bus arrivals.
