Future looks brighter for Everett dance school

EVERETT — The Dance School of Everett is celebrating its 10th season.

The nonprofit school, located in the former Betty Spooner ballet studio in downtown Everett since 2006, initially didn’t have much hope of becoming a fixture in Everett, said executive director Heidi Heimarck.

However, because of hard work by its board of directors, faculty and staff, the school’s future looks stable, she said.

Good faculty hires are part of the success, Heimarck said. That includes dance teacher Christine Weh, who has been promoted to director of education at the school.

Weh has added movement class for all ages — from infant to octogenarian, choreography classes, beginning teen ballet, dance for musical theater and a class for children with sensory issues called “Dance: the Senses &Emotions.” The school already taught ballet, modern dance, jazz, tap and hip hop.

Weh also has increased performances presented by the school, Heimarck said.

The Dance School offers an annual production of “Nutcracker,” which will be performed this year with the Everett Chorale; a studio performance, “I Love to Dance,” of new works by students; and free summer performances by the in-house contemporary group called The Dance Company on Rockefeller. The DCR, for short, earned a stimulus grant from the city of Everett Cultural Arts Commission to perform at the outdoor Wetmore Theater Plaza and at the Everett Transit Center.

In May, the school’s first weekend-long dance festival will include work by dance companies and soloists from throughout the Northwest.
