MOUNT VERNON. — The bidding process has begun for the construction of a new Skagit County jail.
The Skagit Valley Herald reports that Lydig Construction submitted the lowest bid of $40.1 million.
Five companies bid for the job, and all were between $40 million and $43 million.
The county expects the job will cost about $43 million. The county commissioners will pick a bid in about two weeks.
County Chief of Corrections Charlie Wend says he was initially concerned there would be little interest from companies wanting to submit bids. He said he’s worked on the project since 1995.
The new 107,800-square foot jail will feature a health services area and a secure perimeter with concrete panels.
