SKYKOMISH — Cars and trucks started rolling Sunday morning over U.S. 2 to the east of Skykomish for the first time since storm damage shut down the highway this past week.
Only a single lane over a bridge damaged in the storm is open with traffic alternating between eastbound and westbound. All of the highway’s three lanes are expected to reopen Tuesday ahead of Thanksgiving Day.
The highway will be closed from 9 p.m. Tuesday until 5 a.m. Wednesday while crews replace a culvert damaged in the storm.
Traffic was light after the road reopened at about 10 a.m. Sunday, said state Department of Transportation spokeswoman Harmony Weinberg.
“We’re moving again, and that was our goal,” she said.
Heavy loads are still not allowed over the bridge. The storm washed away much of the soil supporting the bridge’s foundation. Contractor crews set up a temporary support system to reopen U.S. 2. They can make long-term repairs while traffic is moving across the bridge.
