Here’s a question I’d like to get some feedback on: Which position in team sports (football, soccer, basketball, baseball, fastpitch softball, volleyball, etc.) has the most impact on a game?

My answer is a softball pitcher. A dominant one completely controls the action and, in some cases, needs only one teammate — the catcher — to be involved.

Some of the state’s best softball pitchers compete in our local conferences, including Monroe’s Jordan Birch, Everett’s Cory Mattson and Cedarcrest’s Hillary Barker.

Baseball pitchers can have a great effect too, but their throwing arms tire faster and rules prevent them from pitching as frequently as softball pitchers.

What about other sports positions? A quarterback, depending on the team’s offensive style, obviously has a major impact in football. The same goes for a talented running back. But they don’t have much success without a reliable group of blockers.

A well-rounded basketball player who can score, create and defend can make a huge difference on the court. Hoops teams with one obvious star don’t always beat more balanced opponents though.

What do you think? What position in team sports has the greatest impact? Let me know if you agree, disagree or just want to share other thoughts by clicking the “Comment” link below.
