EVERETT — An Everett man is now charged with a Dec. 12 gang-related shooting south of Everett that ended a 17-year-old’s life.
Diego Tavares, 19, was charged Thursday with first-degree murder. He has been locked up at the Snohomish County Jail, his bail set at $2 million.
Tavares is accused of gunning down Anthony Camacho during an attack on a party where members of a rival gang were gathered.
The gunfire was how Tavares decided to retaliate after being chased by a carload of young men from the other group a few hours earlier, according to court papers.
Two other Everett-area boys, both 16, also are being held in connection with the killing, locked up at the Denney Juvenile Justice Center on $2 million bail.
They are expected to face adult prosecution because of the seriousness of the allegations, but for now remain in the juvenile court system.
One of the boys, known by the nickname “Triggerz,” allegedly provided Tavares with the gun used to kill Camacho. The other boy, known by the nickname “Trippz,” reportedly drove Tavares to the party knowing that an attack was planned, according to court papers.
Tavares and the 16-year-olds also are accused of driving around south Everett on Dec. 12, flashing handguns at other young people.
Detectives have been able to corroborate some of what they’ve been told about the suspects’ movements by viewing surveillance video, including at a convenience store where an armed confrontation reportedly occurred.
Investigators also recovered social media posts, reportedly from “Triggerz,” where he says Camacho died “for being with some (expletive) foos,” and adding “Free my homie crooks.” Tavares uses the nickname “Crooks.”
The 16-year-old suspects were arrested Thursday. “Trippz” reportedly has a felony assault conviction. Police know “Trippz” from two incidents, one where he allegedly was the driver in an assault; another where he was the victim, according to court papers.
Both teens spoke with detectives after their arrests and allegedly identified Tavares as the person who shot at the partygoers, documents show. Detectives have yet to recover the gun they believe was used in the killing.
Camacho was a student at ACES high school in the Mukilteo School District. He was just a few days shy of turning 18.
