Fire plan in limbo
Talks continue about the future of the fire service in Marysville. The City Council recently approved suggested changes to the city’s contract with the Marysville Fire District. The fire district hasn’t approved the changes, leaving the proposal in limbo.
The fire commissioners discussed the suggested changes last week, but no vote was taken, Fire Chief Martin McFalls said. The matter is likely to come up again at the next fire board meeting in January.
The city and the fire district have been going back and forth on merger talks for more than a year. They got hung up on the issue of who should be in charge. The current fire board is run 50-50 by the city and the fire district. The city wants to be more hands-on, and the suggested changes would move things in that direction. They’ve had a contract since 1991. This summer, the city sent the fire district notice that it intends to terminate the contract, which requires three years’ notice.
Mill Creek seeks public comment: The City Council has scheduled a public hearing at 4 p.m. Tuesday. The council is considering extending a moratorium on applications for development in the East Gateway Urban Village Zoning District. It was adopted in June when the city started a review of its rules for the area. The research, including a study of what types of businesses could succeed in the district, is ongoing.
