TACOMA — The Edmonds-Woodway Warriors seem to play their best basketball when their backs are against the wall.
The Warriors won their sixth consecutive loser-out game Friday afternoon, defeating Lincoln 50-42 in the 3A state tournament at the Tacoma Dome. Edmonds-Woodway, which had to win an elimination game just to qualify for the district tournament, clinched a spot in Saturday’s fourth/sixth-place game.
“I think it’s harder for me than it is for the girls, maybe,” Edmonds-Woodway coach Rebekah Wells said. “… I think they do better with the stress. Yeah, just keep the loser-out games (coming).”
Mady Burdett led Edmonds-Woodway (17-11) with 19 points. The senior was 5-of-10 from beyond the 3-point arc.
Junior Missy Peterson added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Warriors, who face Mount Spokane at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
Edmonds-Woodway’s victory on Friday means all three Wesco 3A teams that qualified for the state tournament — E-W, Lynnwood and Arlington — will place in the top six.
“We don’t want to go home,” Burdett said. “We didn’t want this to be our last game. We wanted to play until the last day. We know our coaches really want a trophy — we really wanted a trophy.”
It was just the third loss of the season for Lincoln (24-3), which was paced by the 12 points of Morticia Mccall. The Abes dropped just one contest in the regular season before losing back-to-back games at the state tournament to Wesco 3A teams. Arlington defeated Lincoln 48-33 Thursday night in a quarterfinal matchup.
