Edwards, Pivec lead Lynnwood to 64-27 win over Kamiakin

TACOMA -– It wasn’t the game Jordyn Edwards and Mikayla Pivec wanted for their final contest in a Lynnwood uniform.

But, fittingly, the senior duo helped lead the Royals to a result that mirrored many games they’ve played during their four years at Lynnwood: a convincing victory.

Pivec and Edwards scored 23 and 22 points, respectively, to lead Lynnwood to victory one last time in a 64-27 win over Kamiakin in the 3A state third-place game – and the seniors’ final game with the Royals – Saturday afternoon at the Tacoma Dome.

“It’s a little bittersweet because, obviously, we did want the championship game and the perfect fairy tale but today I’m just glad I got to end it with a team that I love,” Edwards said. “And on a positive note, too. It was really good. It’s better than having (Friday) be our last game.”

Added Pivec: “After a loss (Friday) it’s kind of good to end on a little bit of a high note and get the win today.”

The victory helped Edwards and Pivec finish with a career record of 98-7 in their four years with the Royals.

The duo helped Lynnwood win four league titles and were instrumental in the program’s first basketball championship last season. The Royals have finished third, first and third at state in the past four seasons.

“For their senior year, for their last game, we wanted to win it for them. … They’re special players,” said Lynnwood head coach Everett Edwards. “We’re just excited that they were able to have their last game be a win and to get a trophy for our school.

“We’ve had a great culture at Lynnwood for quite awhile now and they came into a great group of kids. They’ve kind of taken that and have grown it, I feel, to where not only are they good athletes, but they’re good people too. To be their coach is just a very special thing. I’m very proud of Jordyn and Mikayla.”

Like most games during Edwards and Pivec’s career, it was never in doubt. Lynnwood (27-1) built up a 16-4 lead by the end of the first quarter and continued to add to it throughout as the Royals overwhelmed Kamiakin (15-12).

With about 2:50 remaining in the game Everett Edwards subbed Jordyn and Pivec out for the final time to cheers from the Lynnwood band and Royals fans around the Tacoma Dome.

“That was our last time on the court together with the Lynnwood Royal basketball team,” Pivec said. “That was probably when it really hit and we started hugging the coaches.”

“I thought I was going to start balling right after I got that sub,” Jordyn said. “Surprisingly, I didn’t. But once the buzzer went off I lost it. It’s been an emotional day.”

Pivec added 16 rebounds in her final high school contest. Lynnwood junior Kelsey Rogers also scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the win for the Royals.

Jordyn and Pivec, who both said last year’s 3A state championship was their top memory at Lynnwood, will continue their basketball careers in college. Pivec, a 5-foot-10 wing, has signed with Oregon State. Jordyn, a 5-foot-10 guard, will play at Colorado State.

“It’s emotional. They are special kids and to think that they are going to be able to go on to the next level is a great thing,” Everett said. “But for this moment, for our team, it’s something that we’ll never forget. We’ll cherish it forever.”
