SNOHOMISH — The school board here has approved spending up to $349,133 to get rid of the rats that shut down a student cafeteria in March.
The building that houses the commons and kitchen at Snohomish High School is expected to open Monday after being closed for weeks to deal with the infestation.
The rats were discovered March 2 after a food-service worker reported a strange odor coming from the kitchen, school district spokeswoman Kristin Foley said.
A pest control company was called and rat droppings were found in the ceiling. Students have since been eating meals in the gym. The food was prepared and brought to campus from the kitchen at Valley View Middle School.
Clean Crawls Pest Control Services completed work on the extermination and clean up.
The affected ceiling tiles and insulation were pulled out and replaced. Openings the critters could crawl through around the building were sealed. The rats are gone, Foley said.
