We do not learn to deal with life’s problems and traumas by walling them off and turning away as if they never happened. We should not teach our children to deal with the many life difficulties they will face by telling them to run away from fear and hide grief. By replacing the Marysville Pilchuck High School cafeteria we are doing just that.
What happened there was a traumatic, painful experience, an extremely harsh life lesson, but to cover it up and pretend it never happened by replacing the site where it happened is to teach our children to run away rather than to face their feelings and their fears. Ultimately this does them a real injustice. As a classroom teacher with many years of experience, I know children are strong and capable of facing difficult situations when shown how to draw on the strength that lies within them. I encourage the adults in charge to lead the way, teach the valuable lessons of strength and courage instead of showing them how to “run away.”
