One of my secret (or not-so-secret, now that it’s in print here) hopes is that we finally agree on a name for this decade that we’re more than 70 percent done with. The “oughts”? The “double-zeros”? It bothers me this decade has no widespread accepted name yet.
OK, I feel better now that I’ve ranted. Several techie prognosticators are looking ahead into this new year of the not-yet-named decade. This list of predictions from the tech editor of the “Today” show caught my eye because he talks about OLED TVs, which I mentioned in last week’s post. He does a good job of briefly describing the technology. He also mentions the Pleo, which made my list of hot tech gifts in November.
Here is PC Magazine’s list of predictions, including ones about smartphones, flash-based PCs and tech spending. Hint: the last one isn’t good news.
The Washington Post reprinted PC World’s list of predictions involving Chinese hackers, Microsoft’s Windows Vista and the use of iPhones.
CNET’s home technology blogger makes a few eyebrow-raising predictions, including one about Google’s entry into the cellphone business and one about sales of the red-hot Wii, which he thinks will fizzle as a fad.
I could go on and on with these lists. Instead, let’s move on to a couple alternative prediction lists. Here’s a list of some of the WORST tech-related predictions of all time, including a few made by Bill Gates.
And then there’s this list from NetworkWorld.com of “can’t miss” predictions for 1998. As the author says, “Don’t knock 20-20 hindsight until you’ve tried it.”
