My thoughts: Subtleness is not always looked at as a strength for a beer, especially in this day and age of “big” craft beers. But when it comes to a session lager, subtle flavors can be an important attribute.
Thai Me Up, which incorporates a number of ingredients commonly found in Thai food, including lemongrass and galangal root, could have went big. But the Brewers from Diamond Knot and Scuttlebutt instead went small. The beer’s flavor and spiciness is a slight brush of your tongue. Subtle was the word DK beer ambassador Ajen Birmingham used to describe it and was the word I first thought of when I tasted it.
A sessionable lager is one of my favorite drinks when the thermostat gets in the red. It still has good flavor but is very quaffable. Thai Me Up is refreshing and tasty; it’s rounded flavor is slightly sweet and spicy. It’s a really good beer and shows what two respected brewers can do when they put their heads together.
From the brewery: Wanting to represent the light and delicate flavors of Thailand, this beer was brewed with jasmine rice and infused with lemongrass, galangal root, and kaffir lime leaves. Late addition of Sorachi Ace, Mosaic, and Citra hops, impart a bright and welcoming aroma.
