So this came across late Wednesday morning:
Major breaking news. Sources say major shakeup at Mariners ownership with Howard Lincoln retiring. Not confirmed by team.
— Mike Salk, 710 ESPN (@TheMikeSalk) April 27, 2016
The team has since announced a press conference for 3 p.m., which seems to verify the report.
Lincoln has been the Mariners’ CEO since 1999. He’s credited as one of the key players in helping put together the ownership group that bought the team from Jeff Smulyan in 1992 and kept the team in Seattle, as well as helping get Safeco Field built. The Mariners, after going without playoff baseball in their first 18 years of existence, made the postseason in 1995, 1997, 2000 and 2001, under Lincoln’s stewardship the final two times.
However, the Mariners have not made the playoffs since 2000, and there’s many in the fanbase who consider Lincoln a part of the problem, with the perception being Lincoln was overly involved in baseball decisions.
The Seattle Times is reporting that minority owner John Stanton will succeed Lincoln as CEO.
