SassyBlack, a Seattle singer, opened the third annual Fisherman’s Village Music Festival on Friday night at the Historic Everett Theatre.
Before Sassy took the stage, Curt Shriner, the theater’s manager, tested out his new sound board.
“I do a lot of shows here for the baby boom generation, so it’s important for me to get young people into the theater, people who haven’t been here before,” Shriner said.
Grateful for the exposure, Shriner praised Ryan Crowther, of Everett Music Initiative, the sponsor of the festival.
“The festival has brought a music scene to downtown Everett,” he said. “It’s incredibly important for me and everyone up and down the street.”
At tables set up just outside the theater on Colby Avenue, a small crowd queued to pick up the wristbands they would wear throughout the weekend for admission to any of the 80 concerts at five different venues.
Ray and Yasmin Baron, a young Everett couple, studied the festival schedule.
“It’s our first time at this festival,” Ray said. “I’ve been following the Everett Music Initiative’s website, so I knew I wanted to attend. We’re definitely here to see Greet the Sea tonight and excited about a lot of other music, too.”
Inside, on stage, Sassy sang “You Should Be Here” and “Come Dancing.”
The song titles seemed appropriate for the festival opener.
