COVINGTON — After controlling play for the first 20 minutes of its 4A quarterfinal on Saturday, Mariner suffered a defensive lapse that led to the Tahoma’s Peyton Trask hammering home a rebound to give the Bears a 1-0 lead and the upper hand in the match.
Cris Garfias tacked on a second for Tahoma nine minutes later, and it was enough to send Mariner (15-3-2) packing.
“In the first half, our defense and goalkeeper could not get together,” Mariner coach Vince DeSimone said. “Once that goal was scored, we started playing defensively and I couldn’t get them to stop playing that way. We talked at halftime and we generated a lot of offense in the second half, but we couldn’t hit the net, and that was the game.”
Bakary Dibba and Diego Casillas were dangerous going forward for Mariner in the early going, but Tahoma (17-4) did enough defensively to allow its frontline players to go to work.
“I told the kids that nobody should be ashamed,” DeSimone said. “The second half was our half, but we just couldn’t score. (Tahoma) was the better team today, but we left with our minds and our heads up. We’re excited for next season.”
