Remi Laurencelle signs with U of Manitoba men’s hockey program

Remi Laurencelle’s hockey career is officially not over.

The University of Manitoba announced Tuesday that Laurencelle will join the Bisons for the upcoming season. Laurencelle is coming off his overage season for the Everett Silvertips, a campaign in which he scored 28 goals with 30 assists while serving as alternate captain. Laurencelle was Everett’s top point producer in 2015-16 and scored four goals in a win over Spokane during the season.

“This is a big signing for the Bisons as Remi was highly sought by several CIS hockey schools,” UM head coach Mike Sirant said in a press release. “He is a very hard working and competitive player who will also provide solid leadership on and off the ice. In the recruiting process, Remi indicated that he was very impressed with the quality of people in the Bison hockey program and really liked the direction the team was going. He is a proud Manitoban who is committed to winning a championship for Manitoba.”

Laurencelle began his career with the Lethbridge Hurricanes before finding new life with the Silvertips following a trade in 2014. He finished his WHL career with 57 goals and 73 assists in 260 WHL regular-season games, along with six goals and five assists in 25 WHL postseason games.

I don’t know what this means for any potential professional prospects for Laurencelle. Evidently nothing has materialized yet, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t in the future. Regardless, Laurencelle is a bright young man, the son of a professor and a lawyer, who told me he’d like to go into real estate and flip houses one day. So he’s going to be fine even if he doesn’t play pro hockey.
