I have a question about two points in the June 10 letter, “Democrats led us to crossroads.” First, the voter ID issue. Does the concern regard registering or actually voting? Since Washington’s voting is mail-in, only the registration could be the issue in this state. However, when I hear this matter brought up by folks in other states, it sounds as if they often need ID presented at their polling places. I’ve been a registered voter in California and Washington. I can’t remember if ID was required to register (maybe) but I don’t recall ever having had to show ID to actually vote at a polling place.

My other question regards felons regaining their voting rights. Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s recent decision keeps being talked about as if it’s something that’s never happened before. Using various policies, most states do re-enfranchise former prisoners (and a couple states don’t take away the right in the first place). So what’s the big deal about Virginia?
