VANCOUVER B.C. — The Everett AquaSox picked up their second win of the season on Monday, beating the Vancouver Canadians 10-0 in the first game of a three-game series.
The AquaSox were in control throughout thanks, in large part, to the performance of starting pitcher Ljay Newsome. Newsome pitched seven shutout innings, giving up just two hits with no walks and six strikeouts to pick up his first win of the season.
The AquaSox took the lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI single to right field by David Greer. Gus Craig scored on the hit and Kristian Brito also scored on the play thanks to a fielding error by Vancouver right fielder Juan Tejada.
The scored stayed 2-0 until the top of the sixth inning when the AquaSox added another run on a sacrifice fly by Eric Filia.
Everett broke the game open in the top of the seventh inning with four more runs highlighted by a three-run triple by Craig. Kyle Lewis, the first-round pick of the Seattle Mariners in this year’s MLB draft, also added an RBI single. It was the second hit and first RBI in Lewis’ four-day old professional career.
The Frogs added three more runs in the top of the ninth inning. With two on and nobody out, Kristian Brito hit an RBI double to left field to score Lewis. Craig later scored on a groundout by Filia and Brito scored on a wild pitch.
Joselito Cano replaced Newsome in the bottom of the eighth inning. Cano gave up just one hit in two innings of work, but did walk a batter and hit three others.
