The Lake Stevens School District is having a groundbreaking celebration for the new preschool and elementary campus at 3 p.m. Thursday. Construction starts this summer and the school is expected to open for the 2017-18 school year. The groundbreaking is off of Lake Drive, with signs and balloons to direct people. Parking is limited, so people also can take a shuttle bus from Highland Elementary School, 3220 113th Ave NE, starting at 2:15 p.m. The event is outdoors, so dress accordingly.
Change county government: Snohomish County’s Charter Review Commission has scheduled a hearing for 6 p.m. tonight to consider 12 potential changes to the structure of county government. The hearing will be in the county council chambers on the eighth floor of the Robert Drewel Building, 3000 Rockefeller Ave., Everett. Potential ideas include expanding the county council from five to seven members and making the county prosecuting attorney’s job nonpartisan.
Commissioners plan to take a final vote at a meeting scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. June 29 at the same place.
Give blood: A community blood drive is planned Thursday in Sultan. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the city council chambers, 319 Main St. The drive is meant to help replenish the national supply after the mass shooting in Florida. All blood types are needed. Donors should eat and hydrate before giving.
