MOUNT VERNON – The Stanwood Spartans boys soccer team matched their 2005 season total for victories Saturday with a 1-0 shutout of Mount Vernon at Mount Vernon High School.

The Spartans, 3-1 in the south division and overall, finished with a 3-13 record and seventh in the Wesco North last season.

Stanwood currently sits at No. 3 in the division, a game behind Snohomish and Lake Stevens.

“When we put it all together we do well,” Spartans coach Dave Anderson said.

Senior Shay Mailloux scored the lone goal early in the second half on an assist from junior Aaron Poh.

It was Mailloux’s team-leading third goal of the season.

The Spartans also got strong play from its goalkeeper, senior Chris Layton.

Layton, who had missed the previous game due to an illness, recorded his second shutout in as many starts. Layton held Monroe scoreless in their March 14 match.
