Macklemore gives his voice to gay-marriage cause

“Tomorrow morning we’re releasing a brand new song. One that I’ve wanted to put out for a while. Seems like the time is right….” Seattle rapper Macklemore announced yesterday on Facebook and Twitter. The buzz was instant and fans couldn’t wait.

This morning, in full-on support of marriage equality, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis released ‘Same Love’ along with a beautiful explanation of the song and what Macklemore went through while writing it which you can (and should) read at Macklemore.com.

It wasn’t much of a secret that the Seattle hip hop duo supported gay marriage, especially after Macklemore rocked a surprise Sasquatch set in a shirt the read “LEGALIZE GAY MARRIAGE” but this message goes so much further.

‘Same Love’ is a genuine and respectful assault against the hate speech that is going to sound out like a shotgun blast in a widely homophobic hip hop community. It’s an anthem for change and acceptance.

“No freedom till we’re equal, damn right I support it” says Macklemore in ‘Same Love’ along with a number of other powerful verses that are sure to move supporters of gay and lesbian rights everywhere.

“My hope is that my personal testimony can help in some way to not only advance the dialogue and approve Referendum 74, but also to help shape a culture of belonging in which ALL people are equal.”
