Spring thing: Learn about growing herbs in small places or in containers at the first of a few workshops at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Snohomish.
Cathy Reed, WSU master gardener and herbalist at Molbak’s nursery, demonstrates how to choose a good site, what soils and mediums to use, what herbs to grow and what thrives in small spaces from 10 a.m. to noon March 17 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 913 Second St., Snohomish.

Pondering solar? Four Solarize Stanwood/Camano workshops will answer your questions about effectiveness, cost and incentive programs.
Local volunteers are organizing the free 90-minute informational workshops along with Northwest Sustainable Energy for Economic Development, Snohomish County Public Utility District, Whidbey Sun &Wind and Fire Mountain Solar.
If you attend one of the workshops you can get a free site assessment.
The Solarize Stanwood/Camano seminars are:
• 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Camano Community Center, 606 Arrowhead Road, Camano Island.
• 6:30 to 8 p.m. April 10 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 27201 99th Ave. NW, Stanwood.
• 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 5 at Stanwood High School Auditorium, 7400 272nd St. NW, Stanwood. This event includes a tour of the school’s solar system.
• 6:30 to 8 p.m. June 7 at Vista Madrona Fire Station, 273 N. West Camano Drive, Camano Island.

Load up: It’s time to do do that Zoo Doo that the zoo’s animals do so well. The Woodland Park Zoo’s annual Fecal Fest is almost upon us.
That sounds bad. Make that: It’s time to sign up for a drawing to win the chance to purchase the popular mulch that zoo’s residents have been producing all year.
In addition to Zoo Doo the zoo is offering new bedspread, which contains higher amounts of wood chips and sawdust.
You can sign up online at www.zoo.org/fecalfest or send a postcard to Dr. Doo, Woodland Park Zoo, 601 N. 59th St., Seattle, WA 98103, now through March 17. Only one entry per person is eligible for each drawing.
The postcard must include your name, day and evening phone numbers, indication for Zoo Doo or Bedspread, the amount you’d like to purchase (bagful to truckload), and weekday or weekend pick-up.
The winners will be able to load up their vehicles between April 13 through 29. Shovels are provided.
Prices range from $4 to $60 depending on how much you want.
