Veggie tales: If you’re planning to start a vegetable garden this year, learn tips and tricks at “Starting a Vegetable Garden: The Basics,” a free talk and question-and-answer event from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 1305 Pine Ave., Snohomish. Instructors include local master gardeners, members of the Snohomish Garden Club and volunteers with the Snohomish County Growing Groceries Mentor Training group. Call Diane Decker-Ihle at 360-333-0745 with questions.

Sample sale: The Seattle Design Center will open to the public for its annual sample sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 5701 Sixth Ave. S., Seattle.

Floor samples, including high-end furnishings, accessories, art and rugs, will be available in select showrooms at the center, which is usually a members-only deal.

Admission is free, but nonperishable food donations to Northwest Harvest will be accepted. See www.seattledesigncenter.com or call 206-762-1200 for details.

Home run: The 65th anniversary Seattle Home Show will be Feb. 14 to 22 at Qwest Field Event Center in Seattle. This year’s show will feature more than 600 displays of home and garden products plus an Idea Street of model homes.

This year’s show will emphasize smaller homes, improving the home you have in a tight economy, saving money with efficient appliances and eco-building techniques.

Showgoers will also have access to free seminars with experts, kitchen and bath vignettes, arts and crafts inspiration, home decorating ideas and a wine-tasting area.

Admission is $10 for adults, $6 for ages 60 and older, and $3 for ages 7 to 15. See www.seattlehomeshow.com for more details or call 425-467-0960 with questions.
