INDEX — The Index Lower Town Wall is now part of a state park.
The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission accepted the crag as a donation from the Washington Climbers Coalition at a Sept. 9 meeting.
The transfer of ownership will take some time, however. The department hopes to get formal ownership by the end of the year, spokeswoman Virginia Painter said.
The climbing wall will be part of Forks of the Sky State Park.
There is still work to do, like putting in parking and restrooms.
The coalition will help pay for construction of these facilities. They will also provide money to maintain and manage the wall, but the amount is not clear, Painter said.
The group believes they will be able to get enough funding to get the job done, just as they did to purchase the climbing wall, Seattle attorney for the coalition Jonah Harrison said.
The coalition bought the Lower Town Wall for $115,000 on Aug. 27. The owner was planning to sell it to a quarry.
“Compared to the challenge to save it, this is no different,” Harrison said. “We will rise to it.”
