EVERETT — A section of Langus Riverfront Trail, a popular walking trail around the perimeter of Smith Island, will be closed on weekdays beginning Tuesday for dike maintenance work. The closures are expected to last to August 5.
City crews will place barriers at the intersection with 4th Street SE and at the southeast end of the island where Union Slough meets the Snohomish River, closing that section of trail from 6 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The trail will be open evenings and weekends. Access to Spencer Island will remain open.
Dikes on Smith Island keep flood waters from the Snohomish River and Union Slough at bay. During this project, the dike height will be raised to reduce the potential for flooding. This type of work must be performed in the summer to protect fall fish runs in the river.
